The Thavmatrope was invented in 1825 dy Dr John Ayrton Paris it is also said to sir Jonh Herschel and many other which also include Charles Babbage.
It was the simplest in design a toy based on persistance of vision the first of its kind.
It was a small round board with a cage on one side and bird on the other, it has two strings which when wound and unwound the disc would spin, the bird looks like it is inside the cage.
Persistence of vision is where the retina retains an image for a split second after the image was actually seen.
So one image blends into the next giving the illusion of movement, thats why when you blink it dosent go black.
